How to maintain maximum Battery Health

Every iPhone user out there is worried about his phone’s battery health and is always concerned to maintain the maximum battery health. In this article, I’ll be telling you about some tips and techniques by which you can get the most of your battery health. But first you need to know and understand the meaning of battery health.

What is battery health?

Battery health is defined as the measure of the capacity of a battery as compared to when it was new. As we know, the iPhones are equipped with Lithium Ion Batteries and these batteries are in a constant state of decay, meaning the capacity of battery decreases with time. For example, suppose that a lithium battery has a capacity of 3000mAh. Then after some time, its maximum capacity may reduce to 2900mAh because Lithium Ion batteries degrade over time.

Battery Health in iPhones

Battery health section in iPhones was introduced in IOS 11.3 when people accused Apple of slowing down previous iPhones. So, in answer to that Apple introduced the battery health. According to Apple, as iPhones age, their battery becomes shorter and it may a reach a point where it is unable to provide necessary power to the phone and an unexpected shutdown may occur. In order to prevent unexpected shutdowns, Apple uses intelligent software engineering which utilizes the performance of the iPhones with respect to the current battery health.

Maximum battery health

There are some tips and tricks to keep your battery health as long as possible and I have been using them personally and my iPhone 6s still has a decent battery health. They are given as follows:

Charge Cycle:     A complete charge cycle is when your phone battery drops to 0% and then charges back to 100%. Now according to Apple, your iPhone should have 80% battery health left after 500 charge cycles. So therefore, the number one tip becomes:

  • Don’t let your battery die

You should not drop your iPhone to 0% and let the battery die.According to Apple, you should not let your battery decrease below 20%. The reason is that at lower battery level, the battery pushes extra power which leads to decreasing battery health.

  • Overnight Charge

We have been hearing everywhere that we should not charge our phones overnight but I recommend you to charge overnight. The reason is that when the phone reaches 100%, iPhone does not overcharge. Apple has clever mechanism which cuts of the voltage to prevent overcharge and just provides necessary voltage to keep the phone at 100%. A lot of people can disagree about this but according to many sources, it is better to keep the battery at 100% rather than dropping it to a certain level and then charge it again.

Note:     For overnight charging, you should NOT be using a fast charger because it delivers too much power and that can be dangerous.

  • Charge without a case

Sometimes when you charge your phone it gets hotter. This heat needs to be dissipated or else it will make the battery hotter. And one thing you need to know is that heat is the biggest enemy of a battery. If you keep your phone in a case which has no air vents than don’t charge it with case on.

  • Avoid heavy usage while charging

This is also related to heat because sometimes when we use heavy apps like Gaming our phone gets hotter and it can be dangerous to do that during charging because this can lead to more heat.

  • Too hot Environment

If you live at a place where it gets too hot, then the temperature is a much greater factor of battery degrading than not charging properly. As mentioned above, heat is very dangerous for the batteries so, you should try to not put load on your phones when the temperature is too hot.

  • Don’t leave your phone in the car

You should never leave your phone in your car especially on hot sunny day because the inside of the car becomes hotter than the environment due to greenhouse effect.

  • Use Apple certified chargers and cables

This point is very important! Don’t use cheap aftermarket chargers and cables which are not certified by Apple because they can deliver more or less than required amount of voltage to charge your battery and that may result in degrading the battery faster.

  • iPhone recommendations

In the settings navigate to battery and there will be some recommendations. You should follow them as they help in increasing the battery time as well as the battery health.

So, these are some tips and tricks for maintaining maximum battery health and I have been following them as well. I hope this article helps you. Also checkout my other articles. 😊
