Huawei Hongmeng OS

About Huawei

Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd. Is the largest telecommunication equipment manufacturing company in the world, based in Shenzhen, China. The company started in 1987 and now it has become one of the biggest telecommunication company in the world operating in more than 170 countries.

US Ban

Huawei has made a significant place in the smartphone market, competing with the world’s top line manufacture companies (Samsung, apple, etc.). But lately, there have been some issues arising between USA and China and because of them, USA completely placed the Chinese brand in the ‘entity list’. As google is a US based company, this led to Google canceling its Android license from Huawei. Which means no more Google Apps and Updates for Huawei by default.

Huawei’s Backup

Huawei was aware of the current situation between the two countries and had been working on a backup plan for their devices. Huawei has been working on their own OS, known has Hongmeng OS, since 2012. This OS is most likely to be released later this year. Huawei also ensures their current users that their devices will get security updates as usual. They further assure that the current devices will not be completely banned from Android as it is an open source platform. It means that the devices will be getting updates but they can be a little late.

According to Huawei

“Huawei will continue to provide security updates and after-sales services to all existing Huawei and Honor smartphones and tablet products, covering those that have been sold and that are still in stock globally.”

Hongmeng OS

Hongmeng OS is a linus based OS and Huawei claims it to be 60% faster than Android. This operating system will work in smartphones, tablets and PCs and Huawei’s smart devices. This OS will support Play store Apps but default Google play store will not be available. Huawei will introduce its own App store from which all the google Apps can be downloaded.

“We will continue to build a safe and sustainable software ecosystem, in order to provide the best user experience globally.”

Difficulties

Huawei has been facing some difficulties in the launch of their OS that is why it has been in production since 2012 but still in testing.

“It’s not a difficult task to come up with new OS, but it’s difficult to build up an ecosystem for that.”

Release

Huawei says that they will release this OS only if they are completely banned from Android and Microsoft.

“Willing to continue using Google and Microsoft or else there is no other option (than to develop their own OS).”

Huawei might release the Hongmeng OS by the end of 2019 or at the start of 2020 with the release of mate 30 series. According to some sources Huawei has requested to trademark its new OS in several countries. The major countries in this trademark list are:

  • Australia
